An interesting story in today's Detroit Free Press:
Ban on smoking no harm to state
While it's obvious that the group behind the study is biased, it at least adds some teeth to the argument that the time has come for Michigan to join 24 other states and get rid of smoking in most public places. I know there are a lot of other families like ours that would eat out more should we not have to deal with the annoyance of having to change clothes and shower even though we are seated in the "non smoking" section (as if).
On the one hand it's a shame that restaurants and bars haven't figured out on their own how to manage this issue better. It's good that there are more and more options for real non-smoking dining-- but unfortunately, most of them are fast-food joints. In most other places you're still in the same room and/or have to walk through the smoking area. Blech. On the other hand, the more I read about how major cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago are doing this successfully, the more I think the time is here for Michigan to get on board too.
The thing I'd look forward to most? Getting rid of smoking in bowling alleys. While the argument that non-smokers can just go to different restaurants to avoid the smoke-filled environment, try doing that as a league bowler. I like bowling enough to put up with it... but boy would bowling be even more enjoyable without all the stink.
While I'm posting articles from newspapers (and watching the Wings' getting thumped by Nashville's quick-fire goals), check out this one from today's Ann Arbor News:
How sad is it that we can't post photos on the web for fear that some jerk is going to steal and abuse them somehow? Once upon a time, I posted family photos on this site, but it wasn't too long before they too were password protected and then finally just taken down because it was too inconvenient for both me and the people that I wanted to see them. It's frustrating that such a small percentage of people can ruin it for everyone else.
