Every once in awhile, one stumbles upon something that just makes you smile with good fortune. In this case, Marquee Marque Pasties opened up near our home in Sterling Heights selling outstanding tasting homemade pasties. The incredible thing is that the recipe they use is so very close to one that my grandmother used that it's very hard for me to tell the difference. I had the very good fortune of being close to my maternal grandmother until I was nearly 40 - and memories of the taste of her pasties and chocolate chip cookies are still precious. None of her kids or grandkids quite inherited her knack of working in the kitchen, and in the case of pasties none of us have really attempted to make them. Remembering how much effort was required to dice and slice coupled with trying to get the crust made correctly has been enough to keep those pasties nothing but great memories, until now.
We've had both the beef and chicken varieties of Marquee Marque's pasties on several occasions and have yet to be disappointed. The pasties they make are the best I've ever had, save for my grandmother's. Simply put, I don't think our patronage is quite enough to make sure this small business thrives (and, more importantly to me, survives). So, if you're anywhere near 19 Mile and Van Dyke, give 'em a try. Their web site is www.mmpasties.com or call (586) 323-3764. You may want to turn off your computer speakers before clicking though... for some reason their web site designer embedded an MP3 that doesn't appear to have anyway to stop it. As much as I like 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald', I'd rather it not be forced on me...
