Now that Detroit mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has been charged with 8 felonies, the area is once again making headlines across the country for all the wrong reasons. I just don't understand how anyone can defend Kilpatrick remaining in office with the weak argument that he hasn't been convicted of anything yet. If you want to talk about him staying out of jail because he hasn't been convicted, that would be correct. That's what the trial will be about. But to say he shouldn't step down now only because he hasn't been convicted is self-serving for the mayor at best.
How is it that a Governor Spitzer of New York can walk away from a much more important office so easily while the mayor of a troubled city keeps dragging down an entire region with his actions (and inaction when it comes to walking away)?
So once again, we are a joke to everyone. And you don't have to be a Detroit resident to be viewed in the same light -- the rest of the country looks at our region and laughs because again we are powerless to help ourselves.
When are we going to demand better and not put up with these types of huge wastes of money and time? What is it going to take?
