I guess it's amazing that those of us older than say 30 or so are even alive. Car seats were not a priority back then and neither were seat belts. Who else remembers being told by mom and dad "sit back" multiple times on just about every car trip? I remember when booster seats were just something that you used in a restaurant. But now that we know a lot more about what kind of damage can be done in a car and how much being restrained helps protect everyone, I'm in full support of the bill that will soon become law that will require kids from ages 4 to 8 and/or under 4 feet 9" to use boosters whenever they are in the car.
I was surprised to learn that this wasn't already the law in Michigan - but it turns out that the only thing on the books is that kids are required to wear seat belts only after they turn four. That'll change in July once Gov. Granholm signs the bill into law.
After our kids grew out of their regular car seats with the five-point harnesses, we just assumed that boosters were required and bought them. About the only thing inconvenient about boosters is putting the seat belt on when the kids are wearing winter jackets. And since being in a car seat or booster is the only thing they've known, it's never been a problem for them.
Anyhow, here's the story, courtesy of Grand Rapids TV station WZZM: Michigan kids will have to buckle up, in their booster seats
