I always hate stories without endings. So in the interest of wrapping up a few of the things I had blogged about in the past, here's the rest of the stories:
I do give the company credit for being up front about the issue and doing what they promised. Earlier this year, I read that they replaced their manufacturer in China over the issue and also settled a class-action lawsuit. Basically, the remedy is what we already went through, replacement of the trains and accessories that contained unacceptable levels of lead paint.
I'd like to say we're going to remain loyal customers, but at this point our youngest son is beginning to lose interest in getting new trains. Kinda sad really - Thomas has been a big part of our household for years.
The Atomic Clock from hell: Back in June, I was pleased with LaCrosse Technologies when they replaced our atomic clock that refused to recognize the new daylight savings time rules. Come the last weekend of October, my pleasure turned to amusement/annoyance when the replacement clock didn't "fall" back correctly.
Sure, it automatically changed the time all right - but a week earlier, on the old date daylight savings time was supposed to end. I haven't followed up with LaCrosse on this new issue, out of curiosity I want to see what the thing does this spring. If it fails again this year, it'll be time to look for a new clock made by someone else.
Whoever is in charge of LaCrosse's quality control division should be embarrassed.
The end of SunRocket: Well, this was a big deal to me when it happened, but after switching over to Comcast's version of VoIP, it turns out to be not such a big thing after all. The biggest concern was whether or not I'd be able to keep our phone number - and it did require quite a few calls and e-mails to get it done right. Comcast did a good job of working through the issue and helping to get the number ported over in a relatively timely fashion, so we were without incoming phone service for only a few days. Since then, the service from Comcast has been very reliable -- much, much better than SunRocket ever was. I'm still hopeful for some improved features from Comcast along with a better web portal - they fall short of what SunRocket offered in that regard.
Bottom line though, I'm definitely glad I didn't sign up with the 'official' SR replacement, Teleblend. Their customers continue to report billing and service troubles and to date this company still doesn't accept customers that weren't originally with SR. I've got lots more to post about VoIP, and those entries will be posted in days to come.
