Radio's death spiral?

|

In recent months it's been all over the trade publications. Terrestrial radio is over. Done. Finished. No longer relevant. And more, and more it looks like that isn't just hyperbole, but a process that still hasn't bottomed out yet and won't until the big time operators back out. In my Oakland Press radio column today, Past events show where radio began to stumble, I explore a bit of when I feel this process really became clear here in Detroit.

The economies of scale that this mega media companies were hoping for are just not panning out. And instead of backpedaling, they are simply going to cut their offerings to the bone in hopes of squeezing out whatever money there is left in the business before they bail out.

The excitement is gone from radio -- when was the last time you were actually excited about turning on your radio in Detroit or did so to listen to something other than 'appointment' (sporting event, regular show, etc) listening?
