A lunar eclipse

A nice night for moongazing with a the full lunar eclipse fully visible here in metro Detroit. For once there wasn't a cloud in the sky and the event happened early enough so that the kids could stay up a little later than usual and check things out. My digital camera doesn't have nearly enough of lens to really capture things, but I was still able to play around enough to capture a couple shots of what we saw tonight.

The last picture below was taken just after the full eclipse had begun and was the best one because I finally got brave enough to override the camera's automatic settings. I took a lot of pictures with various shutter speeds - and at least I found one that I liked enough to keep. The view through binoculars was much better and shows me that in order to really get good pictures, I'm going to need a much better camera and telephoto lens. Maybe after I win the $270 million lottery.

I think I'll print these out for my oldest son to take to school next week when classes resume. Maybe his teacher will be impressed that we did something more than just watch TV during this week of no school!
