In July, we received a couple of things in the mail regarding the Thomas the Tank Engine recall. As you might recall, RC2 Corp recalled a bunch of their painted wooden trains and accessories due to too much lead being in the paint. The products were, of course, manufactured in China.
Our family had several of the items and mailed them back, following the instructions, hoping for replacement.
The first item we received last month was a nice apology letter from RC2 acknowledging the problem and the violation of trust the incident caused. They also included the 'Toad' train pictured above and explained that a check would be arriving soon to reimburse us for the postage we paid to send the trains back. That check arrived about a week later.
I have to say that I'm most impressed with the way this recall has been handled so far. It's probably costing RC2 a ton of money (or, more likely their insurance carrier). But so far, they have held true to their word and have been doing the right thing. The next test will be to see if the replacement trains arrive within the promised 6-8 weeks - which would be about the middle of September.
Luckily, we didn't have any of the toys that were recently recalled by Mattel for the same reason - lead paint. But all of these recalls on kids toys makes a lot of parents nervous about anything coming out of China. It's become very clear that either retailers or the distributors are going to have to step up to insure parents the toys they are bringing into their homes aren't tainted with lead paint.
