On a recent visit to the Sterling Heights Library, I learned about two proposals that will appear on the November general election ballot. Proposal 'F' seeks funding to renovate three fire stations in the city. Proposal 'P' seeks funding for the construction of a new police station and renovations to the current police office for other city uses.
The bottom line for the average Sterling Heights homeowner is an increase in property taxes of just over $33 / year.
Not surprisingly, there hasn't been much publicity on these proposals. About the only people that know about them are people that use city services (or watch the city's cable TV station). I'd predict that many of the people that know about these proposals would be the ones that would vote in favor of them.
Like me.
You can read all about these proposals by visiting the information from City of Sterling Heights web site. In my opinion, the literature doesn't go far enough in describing how important maintaining top-notch police and fire departments can be. Having good facilities increases the chances of recruiting the best in terms of both police officers and firefighters. Having highly motivated employees in these departments can go a long way in helping a city stay effective and safe. Having outstanding city facilities helps everyone else by protecting, and possibly enhancing, property values.
For about $33 each year, I'm happy to vote yes for improved fire and police facilities, and improvements to the city library.
