Anyone that has any pride left at all about Detroit's automotive history has to feel pretty good about our area this week, during Dream Cruise time. Even though I don't own a classic car, it still makes me feel good to see all the visitors from across the USA and Canada come a visit just to show off their cruisers. All week long, I've spotted classic cars driving back and forth from the direction of Woodward - and the next few days will be a treat for car watchers. Let's hope the rain holds off!
With every event there are of course critics. People that love to complain about anything and everything. The merchants along Woodward that lose some business this weekend are especially guilty. These complaints are short-sighted at best -- a vibrant Woodward will help these businesses the other 51 weeks of the year. The complainers are a symptom of something bad about this area - we never seem to be able to see the forest because of the trees. We spend too much time focused on the "right now" instead of looking at the greater good over the long run. Bringing car owners in from around the country helps our overall economy which then naturally helps Woodward. Especially considering that as the showcase for the Cruise, there are plenty of people that want to see a thriving avenue - all throughout the year. It's great to hear positive mentions of the Detroit area in the national media covering the Cruise - each one is worth it's weight in gold. So Detroiters, stick out your chest a bit this week - and show the rest of the world how much we love our rides and heritage. It really is something to be proud of.
