Today's news that Chevrolet will be reintroducing the Camaro as a 2009 model didn't come as a surprise. When it was introduced as a concept car at the Detroit Auto Show this past January, the reviews were pretty much unanimous in their approval and desire to see the car in showrooms sooner rather than later. What is a surprise is that the decision to do it only took 7 months after the unveiling. Unfortunately, US automakers are still not agile enough put a new vehicle into production quickly, so production has to wait until late 2008.
Let's hope that GM can figure out a way for this car to take advantage of the best technology available so that it can get 35 or more miles per gallon of gas on the expressway. That seems like a tall order, especially for a car with an 8-cylinder engine. I don't know that making it a hybrid would be a possibility since a Camaro pretty much has to be a high-performance vehicle in order to generate interest and the hybrids of 2006 hardly would be considered 'high-performance' vehicles. Of course if gas costs $6/gallon in 2009, having a 'performance' car might be the furthest thing from anyone's mind.
