Earlier this summer on a weekend visit to Chicago, we made a stop at the DuPage Children's Museum in Naperville. Our sons, ages 6 and 3 at the time, loved it. There was so much to see and explore, we spent the better part of 5 hours there and were sad to have to leave at closing time. For our boys, it made the long drive from the Detroit area to Chicago quickly be forgotten.
The best part is that this museum is truly geared toward kids with tons of hands-on activities that deal with water, wind, building, dancing, playing with light, and more. Mom and dad had as much fun as the kids did. Admission wasn't overly expensive and parking was easy (even if Chicagoland traffic is a bit challenging). If you're planning on a visit to Chicago with small kids, be sure to check this fun place out.
An amazing fact is that Chicagoland enjoys not one, but two Children's museums. We didn't get to check out the Chicago Children's Museum on the Navy Pier, but definitely plan to do so sometime before our kids get too much older. We're jealous that the folks of Chicago have so much more to explore with their kids in terms of these museums than we do here in Detroit. It's frustrating to have to plan a 10-hour round trip drive to explore these things better - but look forward to also visiting the Shedd Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry too.
While it's tough to like a city that has the Bulls, White Sox, and BlackHawks (Cubs are our National League team of choice), all of the things Chicago has to offer -- from shopping and shows to museums and exhibits -- make the Windy City a great place to visit for families like ours with kids that love to explore new things.
