Did you know that Michigan's Lower Peninsula has exactly one "waterfall"? I had no clue -- and after seeing Ocqueoc Falls, I can understand why. Compared to some of the falls in the Upper Peninsula, the Ocqueoc Falls (there are two, an upper and lower not too far apart from each other) are pretty darn small.
The falls are located in Presque Isle County, about 10 miles northeast of Onaway. The upper falls are south of old M-68, the lower on the north side of the Ocqueoc Falls Highway. There's a 15 site rustic state forest campground nearby along with hiking trails. The lower falls has the easiest access, the parking lot is a short walk away from the river. There are pit toilets and a hand water pump available nearby too. (Note: the women's pit toilet looked like someone had hit it with their car - it was out of service in early July 2005).
The falls and the Ocqueoc river are quite scenic - during our visit we were able to stroll in across the river and watch several people jumping off the top of the 5 foot tall falls into a pool below. It is a nice spot - and pretty far off the beaten path. It's simply one of those places that makes you appreciate the great state of Michigan and all the natural resources we are privileged to have at our disposal.
