Anyone that knows me knows that I'm not the biggest fan of the Detroit Zoo. It's probably great for the animals, but when you're with little kids all the walking that is required to see very few animals leaves you kind of frustrated. Although that is still the case, I do have good things to say about the zoo's big 'Arctic Ring of Life' addition. The best part is being able to walk through the big refrigerated pool that holds the seals and polar bears. The clear tunnel that goes through the water is a big hit with everyone that passes through. We were lucky to spot several polar bears and seals-- but missed seeing the polar bear cub.
The fine line the zoo keepers walk between giving the best environment possible for the animals and still being able to provide visitors good views of those animals must be difficult to manage. That struggle is especially true when looking at the zoo's biggest/newest exhibits -- the gorillas, chimps, and now polar bears. If only the whole thing could be as 'accessible' as the good ol' penguin house!
